[Ep#423] How Humility, Trust, and Building a Winning Team Drive Success

How Humility, Trust, and Building a Winning Team Drive Success

Success in business isn’t just about strategy and numbers. It’s about character, trust, and the people you surround yourself with. In the latest episode of The Christian Entrepreneurs Podcast, we had the privilege of speaking with Paul Graeve, founder of The Data Group, about how faith and humility have played a vital role in his entrepreneurial journey.

Paul’s path into the data industry was unexpected, but his upbringing instilled in him the values of integrity and perseverance. His story is a testament to how God can guide us in surprising directions, leading to opportunities beyond what we can imagine.

During our conversation, Paul emphasized the importance of character in business, sharing how his experiences shaped his approach to leadership and success. He highlighted the power of trust in financial transactions, explaining how building strong relationships with clients and maintaining integrity is crucial for long-term success.

One of the most impactful lessons he shared was the importance of grace in entrepreneurship – not just in extending it to others but also in giving yourself grace. He spoke about how overcoming self-doubt and embracing God's plan can open unexpected doors in both business and life.

If you’re looking for wisdom on leading with faith, building a business with integrity, and thinking differently about success, this conversation is for you.

Here are three key takeaways:

  • The Foundation of Humility: Paul shared a powerful story about how a moment of humility led to a lasting mentorship that continues to be invaluable in his life. It's a reminder that recognizing the strengths of others and staying humble can open doors to meaningful relationships.
  • Trust is Earned: Trust takes years to build and seconds to destroy, especially when money is involved. Paul's experience underscores the importance of finding business partners who remain ethical and steadfast, even when financial stakes are high.
  • Building Exceptional Teams: Relationships are at the heart of successful teams. Paul emphasizes the importance of truly valuing and connecting with your team members, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and collaboration. This human-centric approach not only boosts morale but also enhances productivity.

HIGHLIGHTED QUOTES:

“He always found me what he liked to call character building opportunities, which were, you know, awful jobs. And, so it was, during college when I finally, like, begged him like, dad, you know, can you find me, like, some semblance maybe of a white collar job instead of, you know, shoveling stuff all Christmas break?”
— Paul Graeve [00:02:43 → 00:03:01]

“We just help them understand that their data is their most valuable asset, and they really need to be investing in it as it's their most valuable asset.”
— Paul Graeve [00:04:59 → 00:05:08]

“But the truth is data is ridiculously simple. It's strings, dates, and numbers.”
— Paul Graeve [00:09:18 → 00:09:23]

“Well, I just learned a very valuable lesson about humility. I I think it was the holy spirit divine because, I can't really give myself credit for it, but I was in my twenties. I had started a .com company. It was back in the nineties when you could start a .com company with an idea on a napkin, and everybody was throwing millions of dollars around at young entrepreneurs like me who understood what the Internet was. And, so I was running this .com company that I had raised all this venture capital for. And this, this man, probably ten years my senior, came into my office, and he was interviewing for a job. And he had been the CIO of two very large, organizations. He had been, the right-hand man for John Chambers who was the CEO of Cisco back in the eighties.”
— Paul Graeve [00:12:44 → 00:13:34]

“One of the things I've just learned through some of my pastors and, at the church is that we always need to have mentors who are ahead of us, who are leaders, who are pulling us up, who are generally older than us and who have been through more.”
— Paul Graeve [00:16:23 → 00:16:33]

“Show me your friends and I'll show you your future.”
— Paul Graeve [00:17:54 → 00:17:56]

“I don't ever really, really trust someone until I see that even when there's some money on the line that's gonna affect their pocketbook and see how they respond and are still willing to do the right thing in those situations.”
— Paul Graeve [00:22:58 → 00:23:11]

“And the holy spirit just said, why don't you tell them that? And so that has built, I just think a lot of trust, and it's really just helped our relationship just being that open and transparent with my team and just telling them consistently how much I love them, how much I appreciate them.”
— Paul Graeve [00:25:48 → 00:26:04]

“We've got team all over the world, and that's, actually really helpful in what we do because with data, we're always moving data, for our clients. And so, it's very helpful to have members who, are awake when The US is sleeping.”
— Paul Graeve [00:30:58 → 00:31:16]
