[Ep #96] The importance of discernment

Topic: The importance of discernment

My guest today says, “Healing from our past, is not only about the sins we committed against God or others, but the sins that were committed against us as well.”

Joining me today is Vanessa Abernathy.

Vanessa is a Clinical Psychologist and Liberation Theologian whose aim it is to transform systems that oppress people, such that people might rise from surviving to thriving. She is also a third-generation female preacher who is still in awe when afforded the chance to preach.

Vanessa provides psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, families and children in her private practice: Phoenix-Rising Psychological Services.

On today’s show Vanessa is going to share:

  • The importance of discernment. [In seminary, I learned about The Examen, a St. Ignatian prayer in which you track your life over a 30-day period to note times when you seem most loved, alive, and loving.]
  • The importance of accountability. [I grew up in the church and as the oldest child, I strained for perfection in hopes of somehow not adding to the life stress of my single mother. I also falsely believed that if I just did everything “right,” I could avoid the chaos and pain I wit-nessed. The truth is (and I just accepted this in the last 9 years) that we are not “entitled” to a pain-free life as followers of Jesus.]
  • The benefits of retreat life. I have been going on personal and group spiritual retreats since 1993. As a talker, I admit that the retreat is not always easy.

About Vanessa R. Abernathy, PsyD:

I am a Clinical Psychologist and Liberation Theologian whose aim it is to transform systems that oppress people, such that people might rise from surviving to thriving. I am also a third-generation female preacher who is still in awe when afforded the chance to preach. I provide psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, families and children in my private practice: Phoenix-Rising Psychological Services. I also provide consultation, training and collaborative coaching in the community and or via online products and services. I host live conversations via Facebook Live in a private group for women called Rejuvenate Girls Night Out. The group is made up of women ages 20-65+ who log in weekly from across the globe.

In the future, I would like to partner with other invested professionals to raise awareness and facilitate reform in the U.S. Family Court system as it relates to emotional, verbal, financial and spiritual abuse in divorce cases.
